Odd question, but is it possible to start a grade book where students are getting 100 rather than 0?
Hi KARI. Are you thinking about a situation where students begin the class with 100%, such as 100 points in a class where 100 points are possible, and then as students progress through the class this decreases toward their final grade?
I thought it would be kind of fun to see if this could be set up. In my sandbox I created an assignment called, "starting points" worth 100 points and awarded a test student 100/100 so their final score displayed 100%. Then I created a few assignments worth 0 points, and gave the test student negative points on the assignment as if they didn't receive 100% or 0/0. Canvas calculated this as you would expect, removing points from the original 100 and lowering the final grade by the correct percent.
So I guess something like this may be possible, but there end up being a lot of zeros and negative numbers in the gradebook!
There may be other ways to accomplish this as well, so look forward to reading any other input!
I think Eric provided a pretty creative way to do this, but I’m curious to hear more about how you would like the gradebook to work. So is similar to how Eric envisioned or different? Knowing more about what you are trying to accomplish can help us possibly suggest different or more efficient ways to accomplish what you are wanting.
I'm with Kona on wanting to know more -- especially since that's how gradebooks start off. Students don't start with 0's, although some would like it to do that.
If it looks like they're starting with 0, you might want to go in and uncheck the "Treat ungraded as 0" option in the Gradebook settings. Even that doesn't make them start off with 0, it just makes them look like they're starting off with 0 and lets the instructor know what they would have if they didn't do anything else.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're asking.
I apologize for the lengthy delay! I should not have written a question if I could not constantly look at responses. The instructor wanted to start every student with 100% rather than 0%.
KARI, it’s ok! And we were more interested in the why the Instructor wanted to set it up this way?
Hello KARI JOHNSON...
I have been reviewing older questions here in the Canvas Community, and I stumbled upon your question. I wanted to check in with you because I noticed that there hasn't been any new activity in this topic since January 27, 2018. It looks like you received some good feedback from Eric Werth, Kona Jones, and James Jones. Was one of their responses ones that you feel could be marked as "Correct"? Or, are you still looking for some assistance with this question? If so, please come back here to post an update for the Community so that someone might be able to assist you. For now, I am going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered" because we've not seen any new activity in this topic for almost four months. However, that won't prevent you or others from posting additional questions and/or comments below that are related to this topic. I hope that's alright with you, Kari. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
