Hello! I was wondering, when using the Quizzes function on Canvas and assigning an essay question, is there a way to limit the number of words a student can type in response to an essay question?
Megan and Anthony, the new Quizzes LTI incorporates this capability! Have a look at Set Question Options in How do I create an Essay question in Quizzes.Next?
No, not currently. They're working on a revision of the Quiz engine but I'm not sure this would be part of that revision. The big issue here is that many users actually type up their responses in other programs (ie Microsoft Word) and copy/paste it.
I'd suggest making sure the essay prompt includes that you have a max word limit.
Hi, Stefanie. I don't see the Quizzes LTI function under Assignments on my version of Canvas. Would that be because my institution does not use it? Or is there a way to change the settings to add it?
Megan, that's a great question. The Quizzes LTI is currently in active beta testing among institutions that have opted in, and the tool can be used in live courses. If your school is participating in the beta test, you can ask your Canvas Admin to enable the new quiz tool for you; if it isn't, ask your Canvas Admin to contact your institution's Customer Success Manager (CSM) for more information.
You can read more about the new quiz tool at Quizzes.Next User Group, and if you'd like to join that group, even if you're not yet in the beta test, you can do so by clicking on the link to the group and selecting Join Group from the Actions dropdown you'll see at the upper right of the group home page.
