Does the Canvas course have to be published in order to validate links?
John, no, the course shouldn’t need to be published in order for the validate links checker to work. Are you experiencing something that doesn’t seem to go along with this?
No I just did not want to execute the command and screw up my course
Thanks for your help

I totally get that! And nope, you’re fine to check/run it at any point.
I just did the validate links process and it indicated to me that 52 links are non active. What do I do now?
How do I reactivate them. I copied this course over from an already formed course.
Can you let me know?
John, I'm not familiar with this error. I just tried doing a few link validations in unpublished courses and couldn't get this error message to come up. Could you do a screen shot of it so I can see exactly what you are seeing?
Hi John Spillan
The link validator tool will also point you to the specific broken links so that they can be fixed. learn more at How do I validate links in a course?
One of the common reasons for that large a number of broken links, are Canvas content links - links to other content within a Canvas course, rather than to locations outside of Canvas (external URLs). This tends to happen in course copies, and especially when only selected content is copied.
I hope the guide I linked to can be of some help.
