Does your Canvas mail box have it's own email address? Can you send a message externally direct to your Canvas inbox?
Hi Kathy Scott
The problem here stems from a very common misunderstanding - Canvas does not have an email editor, thus no email address. Canvas has a messaging system (Inbox/Conversations) designed to provide communication between members of a Canvas course, regardless of their role.
We stress this in our orientations to our users on our campus.
That is a great question. I do not believe this is a feature.
If you feel this should be a be a component of Canvas, you may want to contribute a Feature Idea: How does the feature idea process work? and your use story as to which situations this would be helpful to you and others. :-)
Thanks Kelley L. Meeusen. So, that means, because of this, you can only send messages within Canvas then? It's good to understand the difference, so thanks for clearing it up.
Not exactly. Canvas Inbox is sort of like the filing cabinet for all of the communications that pass through Canvas (that analogy breaks down, since you can also send and reply from there). You can only *initiate* a message thread from within Canvas.
If you have your Notifications set up to push messages out of Canvas to another platform (email, SMS, etc.), you can respond to Canvas messages directly from that other platform. Attachments get stripped.
Hi Tom Gibbons
Good to hear from you again. You must be getting settled into your new position!
Hi Kelley L. Meeusen --
I am! *waves*
Tom, that was a great accessibility article you team-authored with Amy and Jess for Educause.
Jess just sent out the link to the ELC/WAOL this morning.
Thanks Tom Gibbons! I had managed to reply from my personal email, but just couldn't figure out if it was possible to start a message from out there - but I now know that I can't! Thanks both for your help with this.
