Does anyone have a good streamlined step-by-step procedure to reset a Canvas course for the next semester?
This option should be located on the Settings tab on the left side navigation menu. Here are the instructions How do I copy a Canvas course into a new course shell? You will need a blank Canvas shell first.
If you need to remove the students from the course and re-use the content, I would recommend using a brand new course and then copying your current course into it.
If you need to keep the current students in the course and remove all the content, you can use the Reset this course button located on the Settings page.
What exactly are you needing?
Thanks for the reply, I'm looking for a good way to purge student data and reuse the course content for the new semester. I also would like to be able to revisit the previous semester student data if any grading/credit issues arise. I think I should have two versions of my course, one for Fall semester and one for Spring. How do I copy just the Fall content (at the end of the semester) into a Spring semester shell without the student data? Someone said there was a "copy course" button but I can't find that?
Thanks. I can't see the copy button so I'm guessing my local admin has it turned off or something. I'll contact them.
With respect to not seeing the button on the right side of your Settings page in your course, by chance are you using a non-wide screen monitor? I ask because some of our computer labs at the Technical College where I work are not wide screen, and sometimes our faculty do not realize they have to scroll horizontally to see those buttons (they are essentially hidden ... off to the right side of the screen). I just thought I'd mention this in case your monitor is not wide screen.
At our institution we don't allow the "Teacher" role to do course copies because IT builds the new course shells and assigns SIS ID's so that the user enrollment can be automated. Once the new course shells for the next semester are built the faculty follow the steps in How do I copy content from another Canvas course? to copy all their content into the new shell.
Thanks everyone for sharing your insight, it was helpful. Yes, I can see the right side options it's just that copy isn't one of them. I've heard from Canvas on this and they want to conference call with our admin about best options for our district to handle semester turn over.
