Why can't I edit an assignment I've already submitted to my evaluator/admin? I should be able to add to, or edit if necessary, instead of sending a "Part 2" or "Updated" version.
Canvas allows a user the ability to submit multiple times to the same assignment until the Until date has been reached. It does not allow you to edit a previously submitted assignment. This allows instructors to see all of the submissions to an assignment in the case of draft submissions.
Hello elaina and welcome to the Canvas Community! You bring up a good point and I would suggest creating a feature idea so that others can indicate their support of such functionality (How do I create a new feature idea?). I looked briefly and didn't see an idea related to editing previous submissions but there has been discussion about being able to delete existing submissions so that there are not multiple versions.
From a teaching standpoint, I frequently like having the various version that are submitted. In Canvas I can access all of these, so if a student submits an assignment before the due date and then makes edits and resubmits, I can determine if I will grade the updated submission but still not count it as late. Being able to view past submissions could be very important in determining what has changed from one submission to another, particularly if one submission occurred before the due date and another after.
If a change were made to allow editing or deleting, I would hope to somehow as the faculty be able to determine when documents were submitted and how they were different from one another, but I can definitely understand why you would like to be able to edit a submission.
Thanks for your insight!
