Thanks for the replay Stephanie! But I'd hate to think I have to create a custom stream every time I wanted to follow any of the categories here on the communities. I also looked at the custom stream settings and nothing jumped out at me with regard to the "reply marked as helpful" notices...
I went over to the Jive product forums and other customers seem to be struggling with the same/similar issues:

without any solution really offered.
