I am taking a class in South Korea. I logged in today to find my site language in Korean. Is there a way I can change the language to English (I already changed my location to California).
This may or may not be possible.
You can go to your Account and choose Settings. Then Edit Settings. This is the same place you were when were changing your timezone to California.
There is a Language option. You can change it to English (US) if that is not the System Default, which it is in my image below.
There is a chance that will not work. There is a Language setting that the teacher has access to for the course. That is under their Course Settings page. It looks like this.
If the instructor has set that to Korean, then it doesn't matter what you pick or what the system default is. There is a little note under the drop down menu that you can't see yet. Here it is without the drop down
The note says that setting the language there will override any user language preferences (and any system language preferences) and that it is only recommended for foreign language courses.
I have mine set to English because, like many people, I blindly selected the language I was using without thinking about it. But by me choosing English, that means that a foreign student in my course would be forced to use English.
It may be that your instructor marked this as Korean without realizing the effect that would had. If changing the Language from your Account Settings doesn't change things, then you might reach out to your instructor and ask them if they can set the Course Language Setting to Not Set (user-configurable). If it is a class in Korean, they may want you to work with Korean.
By the way, it won't say Korean in English, it says
That little exclamation point next to it says that Korean is a Crowdsourced Language and may not be accurate. That might be help persuade an instructor who doesn't want to change it to not force it on people.
On a related note, there is a browser preference for language. Canvas pretty much ignores that setting and uses what you, the institution, or the instructor have set for the language.
