Can I share my course content with a fellow faculty member without using the commons?
You could use the export content option in your course settings area. You can export quizzes or an entire course. Once you do that you can download the file that is generated and send it to your colleague and they can then selectively import content into their course. See the following guide pages for more information:
How do I export a Canvas course?
How do I import a Canvas course export package?
How do I select specific content as part of a course import?
I hope this helps :-)
You could also add the instructor to your course as a Course Designer (that way they can't see the important student data) and then the faculty member could copy the content over to their course.
At my institution, we recommend that every faculty member have a "development" version of every course that they teach just in case they want to share the content or need a copy of the course if they are not teaching it regularly.
I see you joined a couple of months ago, so in case no has already, let me say 'Welcome to the Canvas Community'.
There are a couple different ways to share a 'course' and/or specific content, depending on the logistics.
I hope one of these procedures can provide the alternative that you are looking for.
