Creating a New Role Based on Teacher

Is it documented anywhere, or does anyone happen to know, what abilities go along with the Teacher role apart from any permissions that might be assigned or not?

I created a course role based on the Teacher role with no (0) assigned permissions.  A user with that role (and no other) in a course site, isable to change course settings as if a Teacher.  That user was also able to change the Home page (from Modules to Syllabus to Front Page etc.)  As we have a working role based off of the Teacher role, we want to know what someone with that role can do that we didn't explicitly assign or anticipate.  Some things can be found by experimentation, but we'd like not to have any surprises.  Thank you for your consideration and advice.  -Peter

This is a great question, and I'm curious to see what you learn. We have occasionally found some "accidental" permissions, but it was always an unanticipated result of granting a permission that didn't seem to be related to what the person was able to do. It's both weird and not weird to me that a "teacher" (even though the role is only BASED on teacher, it starts life as a teacher role) with no explicit permissions can do some stuff.

 @hesspe ‌ thanks for that great list of basic teacher role permissions.

I learned that any role based on the teacher role can export course content from the course's Settings page.  They would also be able to use import and "copy a canvas course" from this course, if they have a course shell in which they are a teacher.  This may fall into your category "change course settings", which includes being able to reset course content! 

I think ability to change course settings, or use any functions there or on the course front page, should be specific permissions that can be turned off.  Maybe I'll make an Idea about this.
