I am wondering if there is a way to be enrolled into a class without being "seen" by students? If there is a way, does it still allow to receive and send messages in that class? Thank you for your help!
Hi Prescilla I don't think it's possible to be enrolled on a course and be totally invisible. You could remove the "People" link from the side navigation menu (How do I manage Course Navigation links?) which would stop students from clicking the link that brings up the list of course members. However, if they have access to the Inbox tool, students could still choose to send a message to members of a particular course and browse the list of people there. You say you want your user not to be seen but still receive messages - the problem with this is that if students can't see the user, how will the students be able to send them a message?
Something you might consider is not actually enrolling the user on the course but using an account-level role instead. If you make someone an account teacher or account student in a Canvas sub-account, they can access all courses within that sub-account as if they were a teacher/student on the course. An account-level teacher could still view the content in each course, grade student's work, post on the discussion board etc without appearing in the list of enrolled users. Of course, once they post in a discussion their name will become visible there. The difference between course and account roles is explained here:
What user roles and permissions are available in Canvas? You won't be able to make someone an account teacher yourself, this would need to be done by your local Canvas admin. You should also be aware that if someone is given an account-level role, they will have access to all courses in that account even if you only wanted them to see one specific course, so this could lead to data protection issues etc if they can view courses that they're not teaching on.
Thank you very much, this is really helpful. The sub-account seems to be a solution. I have an admin status so I will be able to follow your suggestions.
