Is it possible to create an outcome and not assign points to it? I have the associated rubric, with points assigned to it, but I don't want the points to show as being associated with the outcome, just the rubric. Is that possible?
Hello there, Arlen Wilcock Thank You for posting your question here in the Canvas Community. If I understand your question correctly, you would like to create an Outcome without points but still include it somewhere in your assignment rubric. If this is correct, then the answer is "yes, you can do this". I believe it was Stefanie Sanders who taught me how to do this way back when the Canvas Community site was running on a different platform. But, here are the steps (it's a bit of work...so just keep reading).
The end result is that the outcome will be added to the bottom of your assignment rubric, and it will still look like it's going to calculate into the final total...but it won't. When you click on the Update Rubric button, you will see that the right-most column will erase the total points possible for that row and replace it with --. The rubric will keep the rubric row totals just how you wanted them and will not add any additional points that were put in from the outcome. The only reason that we needed to have at least two cells in the outcome row (and one of them being 1 point) is so that you can use the SpeedGrader to grade assignments once students start submitting work to you. If you had two cells each with zero in them, then you'd get something that looks like this (see my illustration with the light green boxes), and that wouldn't be good.
I hope that this helps, Arlen. If I've completely missed the mark on your question, please let me know, and we can try and figure this out some more. Good luck!
Chris, this is very helpful. I appreciate the detailed instructions from you and Stefanie. One note: When I was creating the rubric and adding the outcomes, it still showed the points (even though I selected not to use for grading). That was what was bothering me, because I didn't want the students to see those points. However, when I publish/update the rubric, it does remove the points so that it doesn’t appear to be adding up incorrectly.
