How to enter formula as answers in quizzes which has subscripts and superscripts
Hello Malini Arewgoda Welcome to the worldwide Canvas Community! The answer you seek is in the rich content editor, which is indeed available when creating quiz answers, though it may not be immediately obvious depending on the question type you are working on in a quiz. When creating a multiple choice-type question, for example, you will want to click on the pencil icon pointed to on the screen capture below to open the rich content editor:
Once you do that, the editor will have both superscript and subscript buttons available that you will see.
For more complex equations, Canvas offers a math editor within the rich content editor, as outlined here: How do I use the Math Editor in the Rich Content Editor as an instructor? And finally, you can build your own formula questions, as covered here: How do I create a Simple Formula quiz question?
I hope this helps a bit, Malina. I'm afraid I'm definitely not an expert on anything math-related or formula-related, but I hope that this points you in the right direction.
Thanks Ken for your explanation. Unfortunately this pencil icon is not available in the Canvas version I am using.
It would be really strange for you to have Canvas and not have the Rich Content Editor; I'm not even sure if that's possible. What is more likely is that you're using a different kind of question. Only certain question types allow the Rich Content Editor. Multiple choice questions allow it, but fill-in-the-blank, matching, numeric, and formula questions do not. Both numeric and formula questions are limited to numeric values. If you want a formula with superscripts and subscripts as an answer, you can use multiple choice questions and have Canvas grade it or essay questions and then grade it manually.
It's also possible that your institution has switched to quizzes.next. The interface is different there and I haven't looked at it enough to be able to address that.
Yes the editor is available for MCQ. It does not work with dropdowns. I was going to use more dropdown type of quizzes
