Emailing students in a merged course

I am trying to email my students in a merged course, but keep getting and error.  I have selected the merged course as the course.  I selected the students in the merged course as the recipients.  I tried selecting the different sections in the To field.  I keep getting the following error.  Recipient Invalid... Can anyone provide any guidance?
