How long does it take after adding a class will it appear in canvas? Im a late add and need to access asap
Hi Camille , and Welcome to the Canvas Community!
This is a question for your own school. The Canvas Community members do not have access to schools and accounts.
I can tell you that at our school our Canvas enrollments are handled through an integration with our student information system, and that the integration runs every hour on the hour. I would contact your Canvas Admin/Support department and ask them, but I strongly suspect you will find that course in your list by the time you are reading this.
One thing you might want to check is "All Courses" in your courses list. Sometimes, for whatever reason, new courses will show up there. You can learn more at How do I view all my Canvas courses as a student?
I am having this issue with a dummy test student. It shows up as pending when I look at my course, but when I log in to the test environment, my dummy student does not have any courses listed. I understand that each institution might be different, but the test student was set up just after 4 pm, and I tried accessin it at around 6 pm, and again at 8. can't figure it out.
Hi, Elizabeth, there are a number of variables in this scenario. Some theories:
By "dummy test student," do you mean you created a fake student with his/her own login credentials? I used to do that in my courses, and since my school enrolled students and cross-listed courses via SIS, I had to take the extra step of enrolling my student (named Demosthenes T. Student) in one of the course sections so that "he" could view the course.
In addition, if your school uses SSO (single sign-on) credentials for its students and allows instructors to create dummy or fake students that exist independently of the SIS, the Canvas admin will need to give you a special URL that will allow your fake student to bypass SSO (and I hasten to add, most schools do not allow this).
Last, data in the Test environment is only overwritten every three weeks, so changes that you make to the live course will not be reflected immediately: How do I access the Canvas test environment as an instructor? When I tested with Demo Student, I didn't use the test environment. Instead, I opened an incognito window, launched the direct URL to bypass SSO, and logged in with Demo's credentials.
Our IT department created the dummy student for me. The student looks to be “pending” in the course of interest, but I do not know how to make the student not be pending anymore.
Of course, I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes as far as student enrollments go, but I did need to request the dummy student from the IT folks. They did give me a link and told me to use the dummy student there. I can log in as the dummy student oseid.test, but do not know how to proceed from there.
If I understand your last statement, I can maybe try that. My main goal is to actually see what an actual student would see, because I thought my quiz was not working, but it is possible, the entire course no longer works, as some of my coworkers who will not be actual students in the class tried to log on to help me troubleshoot, and they could not enroll, unless enrolling is an inordinately time consuming process (I hope not, as that will be a nightmare).
Canvas has not yet driven me to drink, but getting close… It is amazing the things I took for granted as things that any LMS should be able to do easily that just don’t seem to be possible without a lot of extra work on my end. I never bothered learning the ins and outs of the old system because when I took this job, it was on its way out to make room for Canvas. I expected a learning curve, but not quite as steep a curve as I am finding. Sigh.
Thanks for your help on my various issues – I do appreciate it!

Hmmm, It seems that if I open an incognito window, I still end up in the same place as I would as myself. I can see the test student as “pending” under People, but no idea what the next step is, or if it will actually help me out of my jam.
Well, time to give up and work on something I can be successful at for a while. This has been a soul destroying experience.
