Removing internal page title from top of page.

I'm building a home page for my course, and I don't want to use any of the provided templates. I'm making my own, and part it includes a header image. However, when I don't apply a template, add my header image, and save it places the title of the page (which I don't want public because a page naming structure to keep them organized) at the top. I've whittled away HTML tags until there is nothing left of the <h2> tag. Once that's removed the page title appears after saving. Is there any way to "shut off" the page title appearing at the top of the page when I don't have a template or <h2>?
