How do I find a student attendance record so that I can change an entry? Seems simple but I can't find the right button.
Hi kathleen hudson Welcome to the Canvas Community and welcome, as well, to the rather wacky world of the Roll Call Attendance tool in Canvas. To just change an entry and (importantly) you know the date for which you want to change the entry, simply head into the Attendance menu item and click the calendar at the upper-left to change the date. You will then display the existing roll call for that date, where you can change the student's attendance by clicking on the icon to the left of their name.
If you do NOT know the date for which you need to change the attendance record, your simplest solution, frankly, may very well be to ask the student! The reason I say this is that students can view their own roll call attendance report within Canvas, as outlined in this student guide: How do I view my Roll Call Attendance report as a student? YOU, as the instructor, do not have it quite so easy. Instead, you must run an attendance report of your own but the results do not display within Canvas but is rather sent to you as a CSV (Excel) file, as outlined here: How do I run Roll Call Attendance reports in a course? I am assuming, however, that you know the date....otherwise you would not want to be changing it.
And much as it pains me to point this out to anyone who asks about attendance in this community, this is by far one of the sorest points among your fellow Canvas Community members, as seen in this Feature Idea: Attendance Overhaul . You can read the various issues people have in that idea, which is not your typical Feature Idea. (Canvas wants just ONE idea per Feature Idea; this one is the exception that was allowed.)
Anyway, I hope this helps a bit, Kathleen!
