Hello Chioma Aronu Welcome to the Canvas Community. Thank you for posting your question. There currently isn't a way for assignments to be deleted upon submission. However, I did find the following Feature Idea that is currently open for voting: Delete submissions by students. If you feel that this Feature Idea is similar to what you'd like to see implemented in Canvas, please consider voting for that Feature Idea an maybe add a comment as to why it is important to you. I know this isn't the answer you were probably looking for, but I hope it will be somewhat helpful for you. Thanks.
This is unimaginable in this present technology age that an uploaded assignment cannot be deleted. please this feature should be implemented immediately. I am short of words!!!
Hello Chioma Aronu...
I can definitely understand the frustration in wanting something developed immediately by Instructure (the company that makes Canvas). I've submitted Feature Ideas myself that I'd really like to see implemented, but there hasn't been a lot of interested from others in the Community. On the other hand, I've submitted a few Feature Ideas that didn't get many votes at all, yet Instructure implemented them and they are now a part of Canvas. We all have our own priorities of what we think would make Canvas a better product, and Instructure has their own list as well (typically based on lots of feedback from all of us in the Community, surveys, school visits, etc.). What is the feature development process for Canvas? You can find a listing of their current priorities by visiting this page: Canvas Studio. That doesn't mean that those are the only things Instructure is working on, however. (Just check out the Canvas Release Notes documents.) Again, I would encourage you to visit that Feature Idea link I provided to you in my response last evening if you feel that it aligns with what you would like to see in Canvas. Add your vote and comment on it so that Instructure knows why something like this would be important to you. Give examples, if necessary.
I hope this helps, Chioma.
Chioma and Chris,
As a long time Canvas user (2011), I've always appreciated the fact that uploaded assignments can't be deleted. It's the same way with quiz attempts, there is no way to remove an attempt from a student. Instead, for Assignments Canvas is set up to automatically let students re-submit assignments up until the Assignment closes. So if a wrong file was submitted accidentally just re-submit with the correct on. For quizzes, Instructors can allow additional attempts instead of removing an attempt to let students take it again. I like this philosophy because it maintains the integrity of what happened in the course. Think of it as a digital paper trail which can definitely be good when unfortunate things happen like accusing a student of cheating, or accusing a professor of unfairly altering a student grade or assignment.
I won't lie, there are times where I would like to delete an assignment submission too. But looking at the system as a whole and knowing of past experiences I've had to deal with as an LMS administrator; I'm glad it is the way it is.

I also like that assignments can't be deleted for either teacher or student. Several years ago, I had a parent accuse me of deleting his daughter's assignments because I didn't like her and wanted to give her a failing grade. In reality, the daughter never submitted the work and lied to her father telling him that story. Thankfully, we were able to prove that teachers have no way to delete assignments. Students now have the ability to resubmit assignments so I don't feel like they need to be able to delete them. There are other possible upgrades to Canvas that the development team could use their time/talent to work on.
The log would still show that something was deleted and by whom. No need to limit functionality — especially when it results in confusion, more work, etc.
