In the gradebook there are columns that provide a percentage score from the assignments and quizzes, along with a total score. Is there a way to hide or delete those columns? The scores are not weighted properly and some students find it confusing.
Hi Kathleen Taylor Welcome to the worldwide Canvas Community! Those columns--and, by extension, what the students are seeing in their own view of Grades--are automatically generated by Assignment Groups that you have on your Assignments page. If they are not calculating properly, you may want to check this online lesson: How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups? The cool thing with assignment groups is that you can also create rules for them (such as dropping the lowest grade) as outlined here: How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups? You did not indicate if you are using the "new" gradebook or not--and while there are other things you can do with the new gradebook that you cannot with the current one, the basic facts regarding those columns remain the same.
To get to the basic answer of your question, if you wanted to remove those columns altogether, the best way would be to move every assignment back into the default Assignments group that Canvas creates with every class, and go to a strictly points-based system. (You will always have at least one Assignment Group, though, called "Assignments.") You can then change your gradebook to have the Total column display as points only, as covered here: How do I view my students' total grades as a point value instead of a percentage in the Gradebook?
And finally, not to provide too much information, you may want to look over almost all of the online lessons regarding the Grades area here: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10460#jive_content_id_Grades . If that's a wee bit too much, there are also a good video here: Gradebook Overview (Instructors) .
I hope this helps a bit, Kathleen!
