Suggestions to Help Grade Online Foreign Language Course Exams

I am looking for suggestions on how to shorten grade times for online Foreign Language Course Exams. The original that the instructor has done was have the students answer in the form of an essay that includes multiple fill in the blanks. He gives partial credit for proper grammar with the correct verb and provides an explanation. This process took him 8 hours to grade. I then suggested that he prints off copies of the exam and make the corrections on paper to re upload, that shaved off 2 hours. We are still looking for more suggestions, the caveat here is that multiple choice answers are not an option.
