I just joined Canvas yesterday and am LOVING it so far. I also, know there is a learning curve! I have had some issues with copying/moving questions form one quiz to another. My main question is whether any answers move or get copied as well? None of the answer choices are being displayed with my copied/movie questions. Is this normal? And if not... any recommended fix?
Hi Cathy Teel - It's great that you are enjoying Canvas; our faculty have been on it for close to five years now, and while people will always find something to complain about, overall everyone loves it.
Well, to say the least, NO...what you are experiencing is NOT normal behavior, but it depends on how you are trying to do it. I can only speak from the standpoint of the "legacy" quiz engine and not Quizzes.Next (the newer version). You can tell which you are on from the standpoint of where you created it. If you started from the Quizzes menu area, you are on the legacy version. If you started from Assignments and clicked a +Quiz/Test button, then you are on Quizzes.Next, and someone else with more day-to-day experience may have to chime in to assist!
Anyway, I assume you are trying to use questions from within the same class and "move" them to another, separate quiz within that class, correct? Behind the scenes, every quiz question that you create yourself is getting added to a Question Bank which is called Unfiled Questions. (This assumes that you are not working already from your own Question Bank, but given your question I'm assuming you are not.) If you click on Quizzes and then click the options (3-dots) icon to the right of the +Quiz button at the top, you will see a prompt to Manage Question Banks. From there, you should see a bank called Unfiled Questions. Looking in it (just click on it), you should see all quiz questions that you have created.
When you want to create your next quiz that uses some of those very same questions, you will want to click Find Questions (rather than +New Question), and a dialog box should open with that Unfiled Questions bank and a listing of all the question that are in there. That way, you can add questions (and the answers!!) to the new quiz.
I hope this makes a bit of sense. It can be a bit confusing dealing with question banks, so I also advise you to check over some of the online documentation:
How do I create a quiz by finding questions in a question bank?
How do I create a question bank in a course?
For starters, though there are a lot more to check, as well, in the general documentation dealing with Quizzes. In fact, if you are in the habit of re-using the same questions from quiz-to-quiz, I strongly suggest you get used to using Question Banks to avoid the very issue you are encountering now! The link above on creating a question bank will help you, because rather than dealing with Unfiled Questions you can start putting your questions into question banks that make sense by their name and then move the questions from bank to bank. (Which is covered here: How do I move/copy a question from one question bank to another? )
