I need a way to create two weighted subtotal columns in the Grade Book in Canvas to demonstrate a minimum percentage grade in both the lecture and clinical portions of a course. These subtotals are then weighted to calculate the final grade. Help?!?
It sounds like you want to use assignment groups:
Audra Agnelly, thank you for your response! I have groups, but I need two different weighted subtotals from the groups I have that can be weighted into a final grade. All of the clinical and lecture grades are in groups and we need a subtotal group A for all of the graded procedures that make up the clinical grade and subtotal group B for the graded assignments and assessments that make up the lecture grade. Then the final grade is calculated as 75% clinical grade and 25% lecture grade. Students need to meet a 79% in both clinical and lecture grades to pass the course so it needs to be calculated in this manner.
Hello Cheryl Huebner...
To confirm, on your Assignments index page, it sounds like you have at least two Assignment Groups set up ... one for Clinicals (weighted to 75% of the total grade) and one for Lectures (weighted at 25% of the total grade) with various assignments placed into each of these groups. Is the correct? Full disclosure...I do not teach in Canvas (just a Canvas admin), but it sounds like this would be the setup you want. Then, maybe you could use a grading scheme for your course to define what an A, B, C, etc. is as far as total percentages are concerned.
How do I use grading schemes in a course?
How do I view grading schemes in a course?
How do I enable a grading scheme for a course?
How do I add a grading scheme in a course?
I'm not sure if any of this helps or not. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks.
Chris Hofer, thank you for your reply! We have our grading scheme set up in the course to tell us what the grades would be, but I need all of my weighted assignment groups to calculate into two subtotal grades (clinical and lecture) which are weighted 75%/25% of the final grade. Maybe the breakdown below will help?
These are the subtotal assignment groups:
Lecture Grade Assignment Groups (must be greater than 79%)
Clinical Grade Assignment Groups (must be greater than 79%)
These are the final grade calculations off of the subtotal groups:
Final Grade =
Lecture Grade 25%
Clinical Grade 75%
I'm hoping to find a solution to make this work.
Cheryl, I have a similar need. Did you learn how to do the weighted columns?
#cindyseaman I did not get a reply that meets our needs. If all of the graded items were based on 100 points, I might be able to adjust the points within the subtotal groups as one person suggested, however, the points are all over the map. Maybe that will work for you?
