I just set late policies for my Canvas course, will late scores from SIMnet integration be impacted too?
Hello there, Melissa Prinzing...
I had to search the Googles for what SIMnet was since that's nothing I've heard of related to Canvas. I found this website, SIMnet keep I.T. simple!, which tells me this appears to be a McGraw Hill Education product. Unfortunately, I don't think that many people here in the Community would be able to answer your question about the capabilities of SIMnet and it's connection with Canvas, so I would recommend that you reach out to McGraw Hill tech support to see if they know of any late policy details that would carry over from Canvas. Sorry that I don't have better news for you, but hoping this helps to answer your question.
In my mind, this raises bigger issues, but I'm not familiar enough with the new gradebook and late penalties to have a definitive answer.
When I first saw this, I wondered if it was even a question about SIMnet or is it a bigger question of whether late policies apply to grades returned through the grade passback of LTI?
Then I found a document in the Canvas User Engagement group that talks about connecting Canvas with publisher tools and mentions SIMnet specifically. It does not answer the question asked, but mentions a deep integration. How to Connect Your Canvas Course with Various Publisher Tools
The deep integration I've used is Pearson's MyLabs and I am not familiar with McGraw Hill's. I imagine that any late penalties they apply would be configured in their system as Canvas doesn't universally have late penalties, only for those using the new gradebook. In other words, the publisher system would most likely be sending a reduced grade to Canvas. Does Canvas then apply their late penalties as well? If this is the case, then students would be getting double penalized.
I tried reading through the Late Policies: Instructor FAQ but couldn't make sense out of it.
The issue I see is still a Canvas one -- does Canvas apply late penalties to grades entered through an integration? While the people in the Community may not know, this is something that Canvas should know. And the impact is much larger than just SIMnet, which means that someone may already know the answer because they've encountered it with a different publisher tool.
