My grade book says I have 106 pts but if I add the points it comes to 100. Where do I find those extra points and delete them? I have checked all the assignments and I have combed thru the grade book.
Hi kate palese - I deal with similar questions often from faculty at my own institution. Usually, after looking at the class, I can figure out where things went wrong. You are clearly not using weighted assignment groups, so this problem is definitely within a specific assignment or two. Here are a few suggestions:
-Make certain that you have not given more points for an assignment than it is worth. Look carefully at the "Out of xx" score at the top of the column and scan through the scores given. Since it appears the very first student listed is a prime candidate, given that student has over 100%, it should be fairly quick to spot in the scores for that student immediately under the point value of the assignment. Even if it's just by a point (like 6 out 5) that's enough to cause issues, of course. Did you perhaps change any point values of an assignment after they were already graded? That will definitely trigger some inflated scores.
-Have you opted to award extra credit anywhere? That should ideally be done my making an assignment worth 0 points. I assume you did not, but it's worth asking just in case!
If necessary, have a trusted second pair of eyes look over your gradebook for you. Going through all those columns at this stressful time of year is enough to drive most of us batty, so someone looking at it new may help.
I hope this helps a bit, Kate!
