Hi Lynne and welcome to the Canvas Community! In my experience this normally occurs for an instructor when they haven't been officially added to a course yet. At my institution, particularly for new instructors, there can be a delay while HR paperwork is being processed and the instructor's schedule is being entered into our course registration system. You could go to the "courses" tab and click on "all courses" to see if you can find the course there, but otherwise I would contact your institution to see if they know why the course is not yet appearing. I am not sure what is meant by clicking on the second box. Here, everyone is assigned a sandbox when given Canvas credentials. If an instructor wants to start building a course before their actual teaching shell appears, I let them know they can do this in the sandbox and then import this into their actual shell when it appears.
