How can I have a student input a very small number into a numerical question. I am having the students practice using scientific notation.

Example. I am asking them to expand 6.0x10^6 which would be 0.000006. The system keeps turning it to zero. Which is NOT what I want or need it to do.

Scientific notation uses E (lowercase is acceptable) instead of x10^.

3E2 or 6E-6 or 4e-3

However, the conversion happens in the browser before it is sent to Canvas and so you get 300 or 0.000006. But since Canvas rounds off all decimals to 4 places, you the 0.000006 becomes 0.

One way with the legacy quizzes (I haven't tried quizzes.next) to get an answer with really small like that is to use a fill-in-the-blank question, but then you need to accept every possible answer since the comparison is no longer numeric, but text. For example 6e-6 => 0.000006 or .000006 or even 6e-6 if you wanted it because it's text. This is also a trick those looking for significant figures use to make sure the add the proper number of 0's.
