I have not opened the grades to the class out of concern that they can see all of the class
Alan, greetings! No worries! Students can ONLY see their own grades. There is no possibility of them seeing everyone's grades in the class. It's not even an option that you can turn on if you wanted!
At most students could see the class distribution of grades (so high, low, average grade, and where they fit in), but if you'd like to turn that off you can go to your course settings and scroll down and click "More options" and then click the box next to "Hide grade distribution graphs from students." Do NOT click the box for "Hide totals in student grades summary." This will prevent students from seeing their own course grade!
Hope this helps! Kona
Thanks! Now I have to make that decision as too whether I all the student who's doing poorly, too see just how poorly re: the class average, before finding a way to boost her confidence, and encourage her to study properly.
Yep, that's always a conundrum! I tend to gravitate towards letting them see how the class is doing overall, but that's my personal/pedagogical stance and doesn't always work for everyone.
