Can students read both dox and rtf files or should I have everything as a rtf file?

If you are asking about students being able to preview documents inside of a Canvas page, then the answer is yes to both file types. Here is an example of a RTF file I uploaded to my sandbox course, and I can preview it right within Canvas. Word documents will preview the same way:

Edit: I just noticed in your question that you referenced a *.dox file. I had to look up what that kind of file was, and I found the following: DOX File Extension - What is a .dox file and how do I open it? Did you mean Word documents with a *.docx or *.doc extension instead of *.dox?
