Sending files back and forth with Canvas (vs. google classroom)

As a new Canvas user (and former Google classroom user), I am trying to figure out the best way to send a Google Doc to each student, and have them fill it out and send me back their individual response.

In google classroom, this was easy. You attached the file and marked it to automatically make an individual copy.

I think I can do it this way, but wanted to know if there is an easier way.

1. Make assignment

2. Create a link to the document

3. Have students download (or maybe open and rename?) file

4. Have students work on it and upload at end on the assignment upload tab.

PS- I know that if all I wanted was for students to have a blank page to start, I could just describe the assignment, and then have them create the google doc and link to it. But in this case, they are filling out a specific chart with sites they need to visit to get info, etc.
