Is there anyway to export question banks, or print hardcopies of questions and answers?
See Export individual question banks for an explanation of how to export question banks. It's may not be what you're after since you want to print them. But if you have software like Respondus that can open a QTI file and manage it, you can probably then export it to Word and print it. Here's some instructions I found with Google (I have not tried them myself): Exporting a Quiz to Word: EWU Canvas Instructor Support and How to Export Quizzes to MS Word – UNF Canvas Knowledge Base
If the question banks came from a publisher, they may have a more human-friendly version. Canvas doesn't really support printing, the best you can do is to use the browser's print capability, so hopefully the above works.
Note that although the title is to export "individual" question banks, you can do it with more than one, just add the questions you want to a quiz. If you have a sandbox course, this may be a great place to play. Also, you could use your test instance or beta instance of Canvas so that you don't create a quiz in a live course if you don't want it to remain there.
I am also trying to export quizzes and I have followed these instructions, however, I am coming across an issue in Respondus. I have exported a quiz as a QTI file, then when i upload the questions in Respondus, I follow the instructions for boxes 1 and 2. However, when I try to "preview" my document, the preview results are blank. Then I click "finish" to see if anything was found and I get this message "Preview did not find any valid questions. Please correct your text file, save it, then press preview again."
I do not understand what they mean, any help would be great. I have attached an image of my Respondus window and message.
I just tested this with one of my quizzes and was able to get it to work -- sort of. My questions were multiple drop downs and Respondus complains about "IMS QTI unsupported questions cannot be previewed" (or edited) but at least it imported them. After I converted it back to Canvas, it complained. So I ended up with 0 questions, but I think it was because of the question type I was using and not the issue you were seeing.
This is not my area of expertise, I just pulled information from several other giants who have gone before me. However, as I was writing an idea for you to test, I went ahead and tested it myself and was able to duplicate your issue, so hopefully I have a solution.
The thing I thought about is how you added the questions from the bank to the quiz. I added mine to the quiz using the Find Questions capability and pulled them from the bank so that they are actually part of the quiz.
The other option is to Link the questions to the bank. This doesn't actually add the questions to the quiz, they're pulled from the bank when the quiz is delivered to the student. When I linked the questions rather than adding them, then I got an empty import.
I went back, kept the question group, but used the Find questions instead of link, and even though I only asked it to give me 3 of the 4 questions, it went ahead and pulled all of them in.
My guess would be that you linked them rather than importing them.
Thank you so much! It worked! You were absolutely correct about the linking questions option not working. I went back and used Find Questions. I also had some trouble trying to "finish" the import of questions into Respondus because my Respondus Projects file was no longer there, so I recreated the file and now it's working. This will save me so much time to be able to export these quizzes, thank you!
