I would like to create quizzes for each of my student groups in a course. Is that possible?
I have never tried to do this with Student Groups. I believe you can only assign separate quizzes to different sections of a course. I scanned the Canvas Guide about Student Groups (What are Groups?) and it said the following which doesn't mention quizzes:
Within Groups, instructors can:
- View all activity within all the groups within their course, including groups created by students as noted in the instructor's Student Groups tab (by default students will be allowed to create their own groups as noted by the Groups Course Settings checkbox)
- View all created groups within the course
- Create a new group set and create subgroups automatically or manually
- Assign students to subgroups automatically or manually
- Assign group leaders to each group
- Allow students to sign up for their own groups
- Expand and collapse subgroups
- Move students into different subgroups
- Create group collaborations
- Edit or delete group sets
Here is a document for how to create sections: How do I manually create a section in a course?
And here is a document for how to assign quizzes to different sections: How do I assign a quiz to an individual student?
Hope that helps!
Lisa, Matt Hanes is absolutely correct and has given you some awesome resources. Some teachers have chosen to create sections that exactly mirror their groups so they can use the Differentiated Assignments feature to assign different quizzes to different sections; all students enrolled in the course will see all of the content, but only those students to whom the quiz has been assigned will be able to complete "their quiz."
This workaround wouldn't place the quiz in the group; it would simply align the assignment of the quiz with the groups' members. A related feature idea is going to open for voting on September 2: Make Group Assignments Respect Sections
Bear in mind that currently in Canvas, only individual students can take Quizzes. If your plan is to have any member of the group submit a quiz, with that submission counting for the whole group, it isn't possible now. The previous feature idea for Group Quizzes was archived, but now there's a new one:
I would like to see this functionality. It would be tremendously valuable. Currently, I am using 3rd party software to allow groups of students to take a quiz. What I mean by this is that a group is assigned a quiz. Any student can log into canvas independently. Any student can enter in an answer to a question (either simultaneously, or by checking in/checking out the quiz). This way, all students can see and agree on final submission, and different students can contribute to different parts of the quiz.
