Why can't canvas grade book freeze a column (such as Total) in a place next to the student name??
Backboard can do it...……..
Hello, Randy Hoffman Welcome to the Canvas Community! In the New Gradebook, the instructor can move the Total column to the front—i.e., immediately to the right of the student name column—and it stays locked in place during scrolling. Please refer to How do I use the New Gradebook? and then How do I use assignment groups and the Total column in the New Gradebook? (The Notes column, if it's being used, also stays locked in place during scrolling.)
From your comment, it sounds like your school might not yet have enabled the New Gradebook for use in courses. If they have, you'll be able to turn it on in a course's Settings | Feature Options tab. By all means, check it out!
If this works for you how did you do it?
It did not work for me.

Randy, it definitely worked for me in both versions of the Gradebook. I followed the instructions in the respective lessons to move the Total column to the front, and when I used the scrollbar, the column stayed locked in place. If this isn't working for you, you might want to lodge a ticket with Canvas Support (How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?).
...and one more note: I haven't used the old Gradebook in a while, so I didn't remember that the behavior is the same. Please refer to How do I move the Total column in the Gradebook? In other words, even if your school hasn't yet enabled the New Gradebook, you can still take advantage of this feature.
