Can an instructor move or delete a written assignment submission? As an instructor, I have students who upload the wrong document or put the right document into the wrong assignment space. How can I respond constructively?
It is not possible to move or delete a submitted assignment. But, students can always re-submit an assignment as long as it's before the Available Until date. I usually use the comment option in Speedgrader to let a student know if they submitted the wrong document and ask them to resubmit. I'm a fan of how Canvas handles this because I feel like it maintains the integrity of the submission. By having something re-submitted the original logging is in place of what happened. If instructors could delete or move submissions the door could be open to student claims that "the instructor must have deleted my assignment". It's not possible so that becomes a protection for the instructor.
This is really frustrating when a student has submitted something to the wrong assignment dropbox. Because they have submitted, the notification goes away, even though it is still incorrect. Just using the comments does not leave a constant reminder for the students. This is the only LMS I know of that does not allow for instructors to delete the assignments.
Hello there, Michael Polgar...
In addition to the information that Rick Murch-Shafer has provided to you, I wanted to also provide you with a link to a Feature Idea that I created (which was actually submitted by someone else in the old Community space) and currently is nearing 300 votes: Move or Delete Incorrectly Submitted Assignments. If you feel that this Feature Idea aligns with something you would like to see, please feel free to vote for the Idea and also maybe post a comment at the bottom letting Instructure know why this would be important to you.
I hope this additional information will be of help to you, Michael.
