When I post an announcement to the course via Canvas, does that email the students? I'm not sure my students will know to check Canvas before the first class, and was hoping to send them a few things. Thanks in advance.
Hi, Andrew, the answer to your question is: It depends.
I always find it safest to use external email in the two or three weeks preceding the first day of classes, rounding up the strays in the first five days by using both Canvas and external email, exhorting students during that period to set their notification preferences for Announcements and Messages to "ASAP," and by Day 6 switching to communications conducted exclusively in Canvas. This generally works out quite well.
If they have email addresses attached to their profile (ours do because we include that in the SIS upload) and they have not changed their default notification preferences, then they will receive an email when you create an announcement.
