How do I enter the same assignment in multiple sections at one time.
(1) If the course content for all of the sections is going to be the same (e.g., same assignments, same discussions, same announcements, same quizzes), you should look into cross listing your sections (courses); you can still assign different due dates in cross-listed sections/courses if you'd like. Different schools and institutions employ different methods for cross listing, and not all teachers have the cross-listing permission enabled, so before proceeding you should check with your school to see how they handle cross listing. Numerous conversations are actively underway in the Canvas Community about how to go about cross listing your courses/sections. Here are some Canvas Guides that can give you an idea of what's available:
What should I do at the beginning and end of each term as an admin? (Explains cross listing at the account level)
How do I use cross-listing in an account?
How do I cross-list a section in a course?
How are courses and sections related?
And this current discussion highlights the possible pitfalls and confusion that can arise from the nomenclature and process, depending on whether your school creates its Canvas courses to correspond to sections in SIS: Cross listed courses/sections aren't assigning to "Everyone" by default?
So check with your local admins first!
(2) If cross listing is not a solution for you, you can use various content repositories to distribute your content across multiple sections. See this related conversation: Making changes across course sections
Is it possible to unpublished a course, add it to another section, re-publish the course and not lose anything, like grades. I don’t have permission to cross-list a section.
Tom, I would not recommend doing any of those things in a course that is already in progress.
Once students have started turning things in and you have been grading you will not want to cross-list a course. Cross-listing will take that courses content away (If you uncross-list) that information does come back.
Because your course has already started you will probably want to teach it out as separate courses and then have your admin cross-list the courses when you start new, whether that is quarter or semester.
Additional note for consideration: When I was an admin at a community college we did have a few instructors that were only 1-2 assignments in and opted to have us cross-list the course and they asked their students to resubmit their 1-2 assignments once that was complete.
