Is it possible to use a Google Voice number for SMS notifications?
When I try to add the number, Google is not on the list. When I check OTHER, I am asked for an SMS email. Is this email the same as my Google email?
Hi Thomas -

Hi - I wanted to share that the SMS support will be retired in May. Upcoming Canvas Changes Feature Clarifications
Google Voice does not have an email address format like some of the major cellular carries provide to be able to send the text via email.
Software providers typically go with one of two ways to send text messages. One way is to use the SMS text email format. It typically is the cheap or free way to send texts but then like many VoIP or "free text/mobile" number services they may not offer the email format to receive texts such as Google Voice. The other way is to pay an SMS software provider or SMS aggregator for their API services to send texts without the restriction of needing an email format but then those are paid services.
I assume Instructure Canvas uses the first method since they require the SMS text email format.
Since now only Canvas Announcements and Grades can be notified via SMS texts then it looks like the Canvas Student and Canvas Teacher apps are being promoted instead for push notifications.
