0 bytes when uploading google docs

Several students had problems uploading files from google docs to submit an assignment.  The error message said that the files had 0 bytes.  If the students went back to google docs then downloaded them as .pdfs it wasn't an issue. It's a lot of steps to explain to kids.  It happened often, but not for every student.  What are we doing wrong?
