HOW do I set discussion grading rubrics to automatically display total?
I'm not sure from the question exactly the problem you're facing. Canvas should give you the total, but it doesn't automatically put it into the gradebook unless you check a box in the settings.
For more information, see this lesson in the Canvas Instructor Guide: How do I add a rubric to a graded discussion?
In particular, pay attention to the Edit a Rubric and Rubric Settings sections. Ignore any warning it gives you about changing the rubric when you click the edit pencil, it only applies if you actually change the content of the rubric, not the settings (which is what we're going to do).
You'll want to check the box to "use this rubric for assignment grading" and then save the rubric.
If it's not giving you a total at all, it may be that you have the "remove points from rubric" checkbox in the settings checked.
I notified our administrator the need to check the box.
This change is made at the course level where you add the rubric to the discussion. That means that unless you don't have permission to modify course content (say an instructional designer designed and prepared your course and you're just teaching it and it is locked so that you cannot change anything -- or perhaps if it's a blueprint course), that you can check the box yourself without involving someone else.
