Discussion Board initial posts due dates

This question is in regards to Discussion Boards.   I require students to make their initial post by 12 noon on one day and then their responses have to be made by 11:55 pm on another day.

The way I monitor the "on time"  initial post is checking date and time. I am curious if there is a more efficient/user friendly way.

I do "lock" the discussion meaning until a student posts he/she cannot read the posts of colleagues but that still doesn't streamline the issue of having to use the time stamp to determine whether the student made their initial post on time?

Any suggestions?
