Which roles can view an unpublished course or unpublished content? If I create a custom role based on one of these, this is an inherited permission, correct? Is there any way to change this permission for a custom role?
Hi Jennifer Lubkin Chavez - That's a good question. (Most questions about permissions are! ) I think you're best bet is to check the Canvas Course Permissions PDF that is linked within the top area of this online page: What user roles and permissions are available in Canvas? Given the lack of granularity on many of the permissions, I don't think you will be able to change it for a custom role, but it depends on what other things you have in mind.
To directly answer your question, based on my own experience the roles that currently have the ability to view unpublished content within a class (and an unpublished class itself) are Teacher, TA, and Designer. The reason I say that you likely will not be able to change the permission is that based on a quick review of the PDF that I linked to, above, this permission is tied within virtually any ability to add/edit/delete. If you do a quick word search through that PDF on unpublish you will see this. So it appears that any such custom role will also not be able to add/edit/publish items. Maybe that will work for you.
Hope this helps a bit.
