How do I unlock a course? I submitted a date that needs to be changed so students can access assignments much sooner but I'm not able to unlock the date at all!
Hello Damaris and welcome to the Canvas Community! I have a couple of followup questions. When you say that you submitted a date that needs to be changed, are you referring to trying to change the dates of the course in the settings tab? Also, can you explain a bit about what you mean by not being able to "unlock the date" such as if you are given an error message when you try?
The first thing that came to mind reading your post is that perhaps the course is outside of the term date set by your institution. As discussed in this document, How do term dates, course dates, and section dates work in Canvas?, the course dates default to the term dates set by an institution, but these can be changed by instructors. Being said, as a Canvas administrator at my institution, I request that faculty let me know about changing dates outside of the term rather than doing this themselves so that I can determine if there is a problem with the way the term dates are set up in Canvas or if there are other steps that need to be taken besides changing the dates (submitting an incomplete grade with the Registrar, for example). However, we normally run into this with dates after the term ends, not before. Another thing you could check is if the course is published and you have permissions to publish the course, see How do I publish a course?. A student cannot access your course if it is unpublished.
Your best bet to get a quick solution may be to contact a Canvas administrator at your own institution or contacting Canvas Support directly. Both of these groups could look into your class specifically and check on the assignment and course settings. Those of us in the Community can answer questions generally, but are unable to check your specific course.
