We are using Canvas courses in a little bit of an unorthodox way. We moved from Blackboard to Canvas about a year ago, and when we did, we decided that we were going to take all the Blackboard Community groups and split them between SharePoint (for things that aren't academic or student-facing) and Canvas (for things that are).
So what we did was we created some courses in default term, and we called them things like Communications Students or Music Education Students, and we enrolled students based on major, minor, or concentration code. Then, we put those students into sections that will conclude when that class year graduates.
This way, if the chair of the Comm department needs to send a group email to all of the Comm majors, or if the Music Ed chair needs to put a link with information about completing edTPA work, they have a place to reach all the students at once.
However, now one of our chairs wants to send a message to all the majors in a group, but not to the minors.
Can anyone think of a good way to do this? I briefly considered course groups (so all the majors would get put in one group within the course, and all the minors in another), but is there any way to do that through the API, or at least not manually?
I'm not sure where this should go or how to tag it, unfortunately.
