How can I make an assignment or text on the modules page invisible in the canvas student app?
Mark, as far as I'm aware, as long as the Module or module content item is "unpublished" (gray cloud icon), it should not show up to students on the app or on their computer.
Is this not what you are experiencing?
Marking it as unpublished stops it from showing up in Canvas Students, but it still shows up in the mobile Canvas Student app. I was quite surprised when a student showed me an unpublished lecture I had put in the modules page for MY USE. We looked at his iPhone a bit longer and noticed that all of my "unpublished" comments not only were seen but could be opened and read by my students. This has really put a cramp in my style - I can no longer use Canvas but have to keep looking back to a separate web page I had to create just for my comments. CLUMSY and NOT GOOD!
Hi Mark -
I tested this in a course, and with both Android and iOS, a student was unable to see Unpublished Modules (or anything within them). They were also unable to see Unpublished content within a Published Module. I encourage you to double-check your publication status on your Modules and the individual content items. When you publish a Module, you activate all items within the module and then have to unpublish the items that you're not ready to release to students. Could that have happened?
Would it be possible to see a screenshot of one of your student's devices compared to the view you see from Modules?
The other option, if you're certain that your publish/unpublish statuses are correct and that your file access is what you'd like, is to submit a help ticket with your local Canvas Support. They may be able to view your course and troubleshoot better. If they can't arrive at a solution, they can always escalate the question to Instructure's Canvas Support. (How do I get help with Canvas?)
Kristin, thank you very much for helping me with this problem.
I found out that another instructor is having at my College is having the same problem. I took your advice and unpublished the entire module, and then turned the published module back on. which turn on all the items in the module. I then went and un published the items I did not what students to see. This is what I got:
This is a picture of the module being turned off and then turned on again in the teacher view:
The bottom three items are not published in the Canvas teacher edition.
The next picture is a snip from looking at the module in the Teacher Edition, which looking at the page in Student View
That is fine, the unpublished assignments do not show up int the Teacher's Student's view
Now the next one is from my IoS X-max iPhone.
The last three are published and can be viewed by students. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
