Images posted by students in discussion replies not showing

A subject has a discussion in which none of the images posted by students are showing to anyone. I wonder if the New Rich Content Editor and Files has anything to do with this?
More detail on the posts: only two students have attempted to upload images, but all images (a total of 5 images) are not displaying. When I attempt to go to what I believe is the direct URL of one of the images (found via the browsers Inspector) to see if I can access it, I get a page that says "Access Denied: You don't have access to view this resource".
Is this being caused by a recent update? Is anyone else experience this?
