Wrestling with Canvas and OneNote

I am having difficulty connecting OneNote and Canvas.  The steps look correct but then when I try to access OneNote from Canvas it asks me to create a brand new notebook.  This is generally not working for me, but I do have two specific questions that will help me.  I used the Video OneNote Class Notebook and Canvas Integration - OneNote Desktop - YouTube 

1. Can I integrate the notebook before I have students in my course?  When trying to make an assignment one note tells me I have no students and then just ignores my request.

2.  Can OneNote connections to transferred or easily regenerated when we copy a course from a template to specific sections?

Our sections close quickly after the course.  I have materials that I want students to have accessible in other courses so I thought OneNote would be a help.  But not if I can't get it set up.

Unfortunately, I have little to no experience integrating OneNote with Canvas.  I've seen the YouTube video that  @aguethler  linked, but that's about as far as I've gotten.  Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Thank you Jennifer and Chris.  I solved #1.  I could not get a notebook set up in a canvas course that did not have a student.  I had to add a dummy student (in the form of another faculty member volunteer) to the course to set up and associate the notebooks.  

#2 is still a very open question.  I WANT to use one-note, but I couldn't figure out how to get it transfer to the instructor for the first go-round of my course design so for now the students are just turning in documents in the normal Canvas way.  I decided not to do too many new things at once, but I still wish I could get this to work.

Have you added the Notebook app to your instance?  Go to settings, then click on the Apps tab.  Click Notebook in the search bar to see if it's installed; if not, you can install it from there. Best of luck!

I know this is rather old, but while you can link a Onenote to a canvas course it is not the same as the onenote created from the canvas course. An easy solution is to replace the link in the navigation to the correct onenote using redirect.  Unfortunately, Canvas edits your hyperlink if it says "onenote:" to open the app so you have to use a tinyurl instead.  This gets around the weird canvas behavior.

Unfortunately, Canvas and Microsoft are moving farther apart on gradebook integration even while moving closer in some other ways.  As Onenote classnotebook is removing the buttons to link a random notebook into canvas or other LMS systems.  This occured in the update released at the end of Novemeber 2020.  That means you will probably need to start in Canvas to create the notebook.  It also is likely that grading and creation of assignments in Onenote will dissapear.  This is a real shame as it works incredibly easily.
