Is there a way to track which students make comments in a discussion?  I sure is a way, but i just cant find it.

Hi,  @dbradbury2 . If the discussion is graded, you can view student's posts in SpeedGrader. Otherwise, you may want to check out How to Count Student Discussion Posts‌ which is a tool created by a community member.
