Do students have to integrate Google drive through their individual accounts or is that something that the administrators can do globally.

Your school's local Canvas administrator or someone in your school's Online Learning/eLearning department can certainly set up the Google Drive LTI app integration with Canvas so that it is available for all Canvas courses at your school. That is a conversation you'd want to have with people at your school to see if they would be willing to get that set up. They can begin by looking at this page: Edu App Center: Google Apps.
