What type of videos can be uploaded to Canvas and inserted into messages and discussions?
Is it only youtube or vimeo?
I tried inserting an .mp4, but I got an error that the file type is not supported.
Welcome to the Canvas Community!!!
This link What types of document and media files can be shared to Commons? gives you a list of the supported file types. MP4 is one of the supported types. Are you adding it via the Record/Upload media tool?
How do I upload a video using the Rich Content Editor as an instructor?
Thanks! I discovered my problem - I was using the wrong video icon.
I was using the one that is a video icon with the little movie strip thingies on the sides. I guess that is only for things like youtube links?
One thing I still wonder - when I used the correct icon, it asks for link or upload. I had already uploaded my video to my Canvas Files, but it didn't give me a chance to select that. I had to upload it again. Is there a way to grab from what I already have uploaded?
My initial thought is, "no"??? The reason I say this is that I believe if you are uploading videos that way, the videos are being uploaded to a separate media server so that playback is optimized for people when they view it. Those videos aren't stored in your course "Files" area...if memory serves. I may be completely wrong on this, though. My $0.02.
That might be true. I learned this week that even Google has trouble with these videos. If you upload to Drive, they can't play back at higher that 330, but my videos are shot at 1080. Google Photos took over a week to get the same video up to 720. So maybe Canvas has a separate server for such.
