Our students with Metro PCS services are not receiving the 4 digit code when set up their cell phone number in settings. Does Canvas not support Metro PCS?
Here's a fun fact: Text messaging and email are pretty much the same thing. A text message is an email with a limit of 160 characters. You can send a text to an email address, and you can send a (short) email to a phone number if you know the email extension for the phone number. The extension for Metro PCS is email@example.com
Funner fact: Canvas engineers know this and have anticipated our need (I use a small provider myself).
Your students should be able to configure their notification preferences with the following settings:
I hope that helps, Kristen!
Hi Kristen Spain...
I am not sure of an answer for you, but I will try and reach out to someone from Instructure to see if they can provide further detail. However, to confirm, when your students click on "Settings" at the top right corner of the screen, and then they click on "Add Contact Method" to add a cell phone number, are they choosing "Other Carrier" from the "Carrier" dropdown menu? And are they typing in their cell phone number as a string of digits with no dashes and parentheses?
We haven't heard from you in a while, so I wanted to see if Dallas E Hulsey's reply was a solution that would work for you. Please let us know...thanks.
The teacher never got back to me on whether or not those students were able to add their cell number as a contact. I will email you back if I hear from them. You can go ahead and close the ticket.
Thank you for your help.

Hello Kristen Spain...
ok...I'll mark Dallas' answer as "Correct". You might also ask your instructor to come back to this posting and respond, too. As an FYI, these aren't actually "tickets" here in the Canvas Community...just an online forum to ask questions and get responses from other Canvas Community members and/or Instructure staff.
