How can I add students who have yet to create our school log in information? Is there a way to let them view the course without being able to take the quizzes?
Set the course as public. Send them the URL.
Ella, to elaborate upon what Jared Flaherty has mentioned, if you want the students to be able to view the course materials but not be able to access the quizzes, I'd first want to make sure that the quizzes in the course were restricted with appropriate Available from dates, or via Differentiated Assignments (so that only specific students could complete the quizzes, whereas those who join the course later would have to be enabled manually as they come in)--or best of all if feasible, keep all of the quizzes unpublished until you're absolutely sure that every student has joined the course with the proper credentials.
It's my understanding that you have to be logged into Canvas to view Quiz content.
Jared, you're right; however, I based my comments on the visibility options set forth in this document: Canvas Course Visibility Options. According to the document, if a course is set to public, non-logged-in users can view all of the selected features in the course. Page 3 elaborates on this, specifying that non-authenticated users can view quiz instructions for graded quizzes and surveys, but cannot actually take the graded quizzes and surveys themselves. Furthermore, if the course contains any practice or ungraded quizzes in the course, those are accessible to authenticated and non-authenticated users alike in a public course.
And I always like to err on the side of caution. So if I were managing this course, I'd put extra added controls on all of the quizzes to make sure they weren't viewable by students who hadn't yet secured their login credentials.
Ella, we haven't heard from you in awhile, and are hopeful that you were able to resolve this using the advice provided above. I'm going to mark this as "Assumed Answered," and the discussion remains open for further participation if you'd like to update us.
